Aptly named Ocean City is, in fact, a city by the ocean, though that is to understate the summer popularity of this beach retreat, which also happens to be boardwalk, bikini-clad crowd and lively bar endowed.
The Smithsonian Institution Building, a National Historic Landmark, looks a bit out of place along the National Mall as it is a proper Castle built between 1847 and 1855. This incredible building houses the administrative offices of the Smithsonian Institution which maintains 16 museums and galleries, the National Zoo, and numerous research facilities in the United States and abroad, all of which together hold some 140 million artifacts and specimens in its trust.
A three-level underground building below the Castle is the home of two museums of African and Asian Art and the S. Dillon Ripley Center which includes the International Gallery, offices, and classrooms.
